ব্রিটিশ ইংরেজি (ইংরেজি: British English) হল যুক্তরাজ্যের কথ্য ও লেখ্য ইংরেজি ভাষার প্রামাণ্য উপভাষা।[৫] যুক্তরাজ্যের কথ্য ও লেখ্য ইংরেজির মধ্যে বিভিন্ন রূপান্তর লক্ষিত হয়। উদাহরণস্বরূপ, wee বিশেষণটি প্রায় স্বতন্ত্রভাবেই স্কটল্যান্ড ও আয়ারল্যান্ডের অংশবিশেষে এবং কোনও কোনও ক্ষেত্রে ইয়র্কশায়ারে ব্যবহৃত হয়; অন্যত্র little শব্দটির প্রচলনই বেশি। তা সত্ত্বেও যুক্তরাজ্যে লেখ্য ইংরেজির মধ্যে একটি অর্থবহ ঐক্য দেখা যায় এবং এটিকেই “ব্রিটিশ ইংরেজি” শব্দবন্ধটির দ্বারা বর্ণনা করা হয়। যদিও কথ্য ইংরেজির রূপগুলির সংখ্যা বিশ্বের অন্যান্য অধিকাংশ ইংরেজি-ভাষী অঞ্চলের সংখ্যাগত পার্থক্যের চেয়ে যুক্তরাজ্যে অনেক বেশি।[৬] তাই কথ্য ভাষাটির ক্ষেত্রে ব্রিটিশ ইংরেজির একটি অভিন্ন ধারণা গ্রহণ করা কঠিন। টম ম্যাকআর্থার অক্সফোর্ড গাইড টু ওয়ার্ল্ড ইংলিশ গ্রন্থে উল্লেখ করেন যে, ব্রিটিশ ইংরেজির মধ্যে ‘ব্রিটিশ’ শব্দটির যাবতীয় দ্ব্যর্থতা ও উত্তেজনা নিহিত রয়েছে এবং তার ফলে এটিকে দুর্বোধ্যতা ও দ্ব্যর্থতার একটি নির্দিষ্ট ক্রমের মধ্যে অধিকতর বিস্তৃতভাবে অথবা অধিকতর সংকীর্ণভাবে - দুই ভাবেই ব্যবহার ও ব্যাখ্যা করা যেতে পারে।[৭]

An example provided by Partridge is: " 'The committee of public safety is to consider the matter', but 'the committee of public safety quarrel regarding their next chairman' ...Thus...singular when...a unit is intended; plural when the idea of plurality is predominant". BBC television news and The Guardian style guide follow Partridge but other sources, such as BBC Online and The Times style guides, recommend a strict noun-verb agreement with the collective noun always governing the verb conjugated in the singular.
