The 14th National People's Congress (NPC) is the sitting electoral term of the "supreme organ of state power" of the People's Republic of China. It convened in Beijing, on 5 March 2023, and is scheduled to continue until March 2028. Elections for the new Congress were held from October 2022 to February 2023.[1] It is scheduled to hold five sessions in this period, occurring around early March every year until before 2028, when the 15th National People's Congress is expected to be elected from December 2027 to February 2028 and will likely be in session around March 2028.[citation needed]

Presidential election

The 2023 Chinese presidential election (Chinese: 2023年中国国家主席选举) was held on 10 March 2023, at the 14th National People's Congress to indirectly elect the President and the Vice President of China. The President is the second-highest office under General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party (paramount leader). However, the presidency has been held by the CCP general secretary since 1993. The term limit on the presidency was removed at the 2018 National People's Congress, bringing the presidency into alignment with the position of CCP general secretary, which does not have term limits. Current CCP general secretary Xi Jinping, who was expected to be re-elected,[2] was unanimously elected for an unprecedented third term as president in 2023.[3][4][5]
