Aptos, previously known as Bierstadt, is a sans-serif typeface in the grotesque style developed by Steve Matteson.[2] It was introduced in 2023 as the new default font for the Microsoft Office suite, replacing the previously-used Calibri font.
History
Bierstadt was named after Mount Bierstadt of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado.[3]
It is based on typical Swiss fonts from the middle of the 20th century. The name is intended to evoke a reference to the Helvetica and Arial fonts. It was created in 2021 alongside four other fonts (Grandview, Seaford, Skeena, and Tenorite) for the Microsoft Office and Microsoft 365 applications. As a result, Bierstadt was considered a possible successor to Microsoft Office's Calibri standard font, which was introduced in 2007.[4]
In July 2023, Microsoft announced that Bierstadt would be the successor to Calibri, although it would be renamed Aptos after the place of the same name on the Pacific coast of California.[5]
