Chai is an AI platform that uses large language models (LLMs) which users interact with, originally released in 2021.[1] The principal feature of the app is to provide a platform for users to talk to AI characters. Chatbots are created by users by providing a personality and prompt of their choosing, and are subsequently published to the platform for other users to search and chat with.[2]
History
Chai was founded in Cambridge, England by CEO William Beauchamp. The company later relocated to Palo Alto, California.[3]
Controversies
In December 2024, the Washington Post reported that authorities in Belgium launched an investigation into the company following a complaint. The investigation, started in July 2024, after a Dutch man died by suicide following extensive chats on the Chai app.[4]
