I.S.S. is a 2023 American science fiction thriller film directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite and written by Nick Shafir. The film stars Ariana DeBose, Chris Messina, John Gallagher Jr., Maria Mashkova, Costa Ronin, and Pilou Asbæk.

I.S.S. had its world premiere at the Tribeca Festival on June 12, 2023, and is scheduled to be theatrically released in the United States on January 19, 2024.

Premise

The film centers on a group of astronauts and cosmonauts living aboard the International Space Station.[2][3] Tensions flare as a worldwide conflict breaks out on Earth.[3] Reeling from this, the astronauts receive orders from the ground: take control of the station by any means necessary.[3]

Cast

Production

In December 2020, Nick Shafir's screenplay I.S.S. was included on that year's "Black List" of most-liked unproduced screenplays.[4] In January 2021, it was announced that the film had been greenlit for production by LD Entertainment with Cowperthwaite directing. Chris Messina and Pilou Asbæk were reported to star in the film.[5] In February, it was reported that Ariana DeBose had also joined the cast.[6]

I.S.S. began filming at Screen Gems Studios in Wilmington, North Carolina, in February 2021.[7][8]

Release

In August 2023, Bleecker Street acquired the United States distribution rights.[9] The film will be theatrically released on January 19, 2024.[10]

Reception

On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 92% of 13 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 7.3/10.[11]
