Stray Kids' in-house production team 3Racha and Charlie Puth held a song camp for working on "Lose My Breath" in September 2023 during 3Racha's attendance at the 2023 Global Citizen Festival.[1] The both first publicly interacted in October 2023 when he was in Seoul, South Korea for the three-day shows of the Charlie Live Experience. Puth posted Instagram Stories to thank Stray Kids for sending a meal. Then, the group responded to his story, "Good luck with your show Charlie! Wanna join ours...? Hahaha."[2]
The next year, on April 17, 2024, Stray Kids announced the single, "Lose My Breath", which features Puth, set to be released on May 10, 2024.[3]JYP Entertainment described the song as the "ignite anticipation" for a forthcoming Korean release in summer 2024.[4] Pre-save and CD single pre-order for US customers were available the next day.[5] The individual and group teaser images express their "suffocating and confused feelings" and "being unable to control oneself" because of "unfamiliar feelings of love" with "sadness eyes in a dark space".[6][7] Two snippets of "Lose My Breath" were also teased on April 26 and 30.[8][9] The group introduced the song via the video "Intro: Lose My Breath", uploaded on May 9.[10]
Lyrics and composition
"Lose My Breath" was written by Puth, 3Racha (consisting of Bang Chan, Changbin, Han), Jacob Kasher Hindlin, Natalie Salomon, and Johnny Goldstein; Puth and Goldstein handles the production.[11] Musically, it has "an old-school feel but also a strong R&B vibe,"[12] and included guitar arpeggios.[13] Lyrically, the song expresses the unfamiliar feeling of meeting love interest for the first time,[14] bringing intense emotion that protagonist seems to cannot breathe and their heart stops beating.[15]Teen Vogue called the song a "suave pop number with '90s boyband sensibilities".[16]
Music video
An accompanying music video for "Lose My Breath" premiered on May 10, 2024, in conjunction with the single release,[17] preceded by two teaser videos.[18][19] The music video depicts Stray Kids doing different routines and chasing an unknown force as meteor-like fireworks explode in the sky,[20][21] reflecting loving and longing for someone enough with the theme of mermaid.[22]
