"Ramonda" (Serbian Cyrillic: Рамонда) is a song by the Serbian singer and songwriter Teya Dora, which will represent Serbia at the Eurovision Song Contest 2024, after winning Pesma za Evroviziju '24.

Background

After attracting international attention with her 2023 single "Džanum", Teya Dora applied to take part in Pesma za Evroviziju '24. She confirmed the information on 16 December 2023 in Radio Television of Serbia's show Jedan dobar dan. She had previously taken part in Pesma za Evroviziju as a songwriter, having written Filarri's entry for the 2023 edition.[1] During the same month, she was confirmed as one of the PZE '24 participants.[2][3] On 25 January 2024, "Ramonda" was released, along with all the other songs from the competition.[4]

Composition

"Ramonda" was written by the singer, with Andrijano "Ajzi" Kadović and Luka "Luxonee" Jovanović co-authoring lyrics and music, respectively.[5][6] It has been described as a "magical lullaby".[7]

The main motif of its lyrics is Natalie's ramonda, the symbol of Serbian people's struggle and victory in World War I, due to its ability to revive itself even after it's completely dried out; Serbia had lost 28% of its total population in World War I. A ramonda is worn in the eve of and on the Armistice Day in Serbia,[8] in the same fashion as the remembrance poppy. Teya Dora said about the song:[7]

I wish I was like a ramonda, which rises like a phoenix from the worst possible conditions. One drop of water and only a small glimmer of hope is enough for it to take the path that leads it to its original beauty and strength. I want the people to interpret the lyrics themselves, just like they've done with my previous songs, i.e. see some path of their own through the metaphor that I gave them. A path of the brave who fight until the last moment, who won't give up even when it seems that there's no hope.

Music video

The music video for "Ramonda" was released on 1 March, a day before the PZE '24 final. The video opens with the quote "The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it" in English,[8] a paraphrase of John 1:5.[9] It features Teya Dora lying on a rock, and following a light that's leading her to a mountain (possibly a symbol of Rtanj, Natalie's ramondas' habitat). It concludes with a scene of the flower resurrecting.[10] Informer described the music video as "worthy of global stars".[11]

Pesma za Evroviziju '24

The song qualified from its semi-final on 29 February 2024,[12] and went on to win the contest on 2 March 2024, making it Serbia's entry in the Eurovision Song Contest 2024. The performance saw Teya Dora lying on a rock, similar to the one featured in the music video.[10] It earned her the maximum 12 points from the jury, as well as 10 points from televoting, falling behind Breskvica's "Gnezdo orlovo".[13]
