Sankarapuram[1] is a census Town Panchayat of Sivaganga district in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. This census town is located at south western part of Karaikudi on the national highway NH536.[2]

As per census 2011, The Sankarapuram Census Town has population of 26,536 of which 13,283 are males while 13,253 are females as per report released by Census India 2011. Population of Children with age of 0-6 is 2781 which is 10.48% of total population of Sankarapuram (CT). In Sankarapuram Census Town, Female Sex Ratio is of 998 against state average of 996. Moreover, Child Sex Ratio in Sankarapuram is around 960 compared to Tamil Nadu state average of 943. Literacy rate of Sankarapuram city is 91.65% higher than state average of 80.09%. In Sankarapuram [Panchayat 1], Male literacy is around 95.02% while female literacy rate is 88.29%. It has total administration over 6,854 houses to which it supplies basic amenities like water and sewerage. It is also authorize to build roads within Census Town limits and impose taxes on properties coming under its jurisdiction.

Tamil Nadu government is planning to have the permanent primary health care center after the Covid pandemic [3] This town is going to be added with Karaikudi Municipal corporation as part of city limit extensions [4].

Currently the town panchayat has 15 wards with two villages consisting Sakkottai and Sankarapuram census town administered by village officers[5].

Plea to annex with Karaikudi Municipality

As it came on the news paper [6] Sankarapuram panchayat is one of the largest village panchayats in Sivaganga district, with a population of 40,000 and 15 wards. There has been a long time plea by the people of the panchayat to be annexed with the Karaikudi Municipality.
