History

The construction of the stadium began in 1960 and it was officially opened on 10 April 1962 by the third Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Tuanku Syed Putra.[2] It was the first indoor stadium in Malaysia.[3]

The stadium was renovated thrice in 1982, 1985 and 2015.

For most major indoor events in Kuala Lumpur, the Stadium Negara has largely been supplanted in use by the Axiata Arena (in terms of modernity and capacity).
