Sundari is a 2021 Indian Tamil-language dramatic series having two seasons. The first season of the series stars Gabriella Sellus in the title role along with Jishnu Menon^[3] and Shreegopika Neelanath. It premiered on Sun TV on 22 February 2021 and ended on 26 August 2023. After a 7-year leap, it continues as the second season of the series starring with again Gabriella Sellus and Jishnu Menon in addition with Krishna Raghunandan in the lead and began from 28 August 2023 onwards. It is available for worldwide streaming on Sun NXT.^[4]

Plot

Season 1

IAS Sundari Devi alias Sundari is the story of a girl who faces discrimination for her dark skin, yet she fights against adversities in life. She has a kind heart but struggles to find the right man to marry. Undeterred, she strives to become an IAS officer. Her journey towards achieving her goal takes her through many ups and downs in life and she firmly believes that inner beauty is more important than physical appearance, which forms the crux of the story. It is also about the story of fair-skinned urban girl, Anupriya alias Anu, who is modern, empowered, and waiting for a loving and sincere partner. She does gets a loving husband, Karthikeyan alias Karthick, but is not a sincere man who misuses and emotionally manipulates her love for his desires and fantasies on family life.

It is also about Karthikeyan alias Karthick, a man from a village of Sundari and her family person, who by relationship will be marrying her but is having an imagination and desire for fair-skinned woman for his family life.

It's about his perception of men from his social background have about urban, fair-skinned, and empowered woman like Anu; and how they objectify them. Anu is made a scapegoat and invalidated to validate potential in village women, Sundari. She's not allowed to make her own decisions by scapegoating her over her health issues. However, Karthick is shown in a better light of wanting to have a family with Anu for her skin complexion that he also falls for her sincere love. Yet he is perverse and manipulates her for his selfish desires because of his fantasies.

At last, Anu, Sundari and her family comes to Know about the true face of Karthick. Anu finally left out of the house and she went to orphanage by giving her Child Thamizh to Sundari to take full responsibility as Mother of Thamizh. It shown that Karthick committed suicide and Sundari is going to Abroad to pursue her training along with her child Thamizh and grandmother Gandhimathi.

Season 2

7 Years Later

Now, Sundari Devi alias Sundari became IAS and lives with her grandma Gandhimathi, Thamizh (who is Anu and Karthick daughter), Mr. Krishnakanthan alias Krishna, Mrs. Malini Krishnakanthan and Kurangu Kumar. Mr. Krishna and Mrs.Malini have opened a Murugan convenience store. It is also about the story of Vetriselvan alias Vetri a former IAS officer lives with his son Akhilan Vetriselvan.

It is also shows that Karthick is still alive and now he works as PT Master where his daughter Thamizh Karthikeyan and Akhilan Vetriselvan study in the same school.Then, Rajappan a ruthless village president and also enemy of Sundari, Vetri and Karthick and it forms the crux of the story.

Casting

Season 1

The series is a family melodrama that airs on Sun TV. Gabriella Sellus^[6] was cast in the female lead role of Sundari. Jishnu Menon was cast for the male lead role of Karthik. Shreegopika Neelanath was cast as second female lead role. Indumathy Manikandan was cast in a supporting role of Sundari's Mother. Minnal Deepa was cast in a supporting role. Manohar Krishnan, Aravish Kumar, P. R. Varalakshmi, Premi Venkat and others were also selected for supporting roles.

Season 2

Some former cast-members from the first season were retained except Anu played by Shreegopika. Additionally, new characters and entries too took place in the new season, like Master Sarvesh Raghav and few others. Krishna Raghunandan was cast in the main role in the serial,^[7][8] making his comeback to Tamil television after Thalattu. Actress Vadivukkarasi was cast in October 2023.^[9]
