The Wild Robot is an upcoming American animated science-fiction adventure film based on the book series of the same name by Peter Brown, produced by DreamWorks Animation and distributed by Universal Pictures. The film was written and directed by Chris Sanders, who also produced the film with Jeff Hermann, while Sanders longtime collaborative partner Dean DeBlois serves as executive producer. The film stars the voices of Lupita Nyong'o, Pedro Pascal, Bill Nighy, Catherine O'Hara, Kit Connor, Stephanie Hsu.

The Wild Robot is scheduled to be theatrically released on September 20, 2024.

Premise

The Wild Robot follows Rozzum 7134 ("Roz" for short), a futuristic robot that washes ashore on a deserted island. From there, according to the official synopsis, "a tale of survival and discovery begins when she becomes the unexpected protector to an orphaned gosling, which she names Brightbill. Together they struggle to survive the harsh environment, but only succeed with the help of a close-knit group of misfit animals, who become first friends, then family. Ultimately Roz and company save the island from a robotic invasion by Roz's manufacturer, looking to bring her back to civilization by any means necessary."[1]

Production

Development

On September 28, 2023, DreamWorks Animation announced an animated film adaptation of the book series The Wild Robot by Peter Brown, with Chris Sanders writing and directing, Jeff Hermann producing, and Sanders' longtime creative collaborator Dean DeBlois executive producing. Other crew members have also been revealed, including production designer Raymond Zibach, editor Mary Blee, and head of story Heidi Jo Gilbert.[2]

It will be the last film to be made entirely by DreamWorks Animation in-house at their Glendale campus.[3] Cartoon Brew reported in October 2023 that DreamWorks was moving away from producing films in-house to rely more heavily on outside studios after 2024, as part of a layoff by chief operating officer Randy Lake in a series of meetings the previous month. According to the report, Sony Pictures Imageworks was named as the animation service for one of DreamWorks' two unannounced films scheduled for 2025.[3]

Release

The Wild Robot is scheduled to be released on September 20, 2024.[4]

As part of Universal's deal with Netflix, the film will stream on Peacock for the first four months of the pay-TV window, then will move to Netflix for the next ten, and then will return to Peacock for the remaining four.[5][6]
