Throchi Fort (Urdu: تھروچی قلعہ) is a historical fort in Throchi village of Kotli district in Azad Jammu and Kashmir.[1][2] The fort is situated on a hilltop overlooking the village and surrounding areas.[3]

History

The original name of Tiruchi fort is Dara, it is called Tiruchi today compared to Tiruchi village, but if you look at the history, this village named Tiruchi is not three hundred years old, while the history of Dara Fort is six hundred years old. The fort (Dara) which is now known as Tiruchi fort is located in Tiruchi, a town of Kotli district of Azad Kashmir. This fort is located on a hill 10 km southwest of Kotli city. The original name of the fort is Dara. Tiruchi Dara Fort was built in 1460 by Nawab Sidhnuti Sardar Rabnawaz Khan Saduzai, the fort was initially a fort of only two round minarets. These two towers of this fort had four stone-throwing mountain cannons while its two towers could accommodate 200 archers. After that, the construction and expansion of this fort was done by Nawab Ain Punnu Khan Saduzai, the son of Nawab Sidhnuti Sardar Rabnawaz Khan, by extending it further in 1510. But the biggest and last expansion of this fort was done by Sardar Saeed Khan Saduzai, the most famous Nawab ruler of Siddhunti in 16th century AD. In the Third Sikh Sidhnuti War of 1837, Sardar Sikander Khan, the fort-keeper of the Sidhnuti state, was appointed in this fort, who was killed in this fort along with his entire army, after which the fort went into the possession of the Sikh Khalsa. According to the well-known historian of Kashmir, Muhammad Deen, in the history of the nations of Poonch Kashmir, the last fort holder of Fort (Dara) Tiruch was Sikandar Khan Saduzai, a well-known general of the Siddhnauti state, who was martyred in the third battle of the Sikh Siddhnauti. Professor Nargis Das writes in his book Tarikh Dogra Desh Jammu and Kashmir that from 1819 to 1837 the fifteen forts of the Sidhnuti state that defeated the Sikh Khalsa included one fort (Dara) Tiruch. In the Third Sikh Sidhnuti War of 1837, this fort was occupied by the Sikhs and Dogras until 1947. In the Poonch Rebellion of 1947, this fort was liberated from the Dogra succession. [4] [5] [6]
