Thomas Sowell
Thomas Sowell (s. 30. kesäkuuta 1930) on yhdysvaltalainen taloustieteilijä ja yhteiskuntateoreetikko, joka on tullut tunnetuksi väittämästä jonka mukaan tukipolitiikka on rikkonut afroamerikkalaiset perheet. Sowell on ollut Stanfordin yliopiston Hoover-instituutin Senior Fellow vuodesta 1980. Sowellin mukaan afroamerikkalaiset ovat selvinneet vuosisatoja orjuudessa ja Jim Crow -laeista, mutta heidän perheensä ovat hajonneet hyvinvointivaltion laajentamisen vaikutuksesta, jota vasemmistolaiset ovat ajaneet. Sowellin mielestä rasismi ei ole juurisyy mustien heikkoon tilanteeseen Yhdysvalloissa, vaan hyvinvointivaltio[1]. Sowell on kirjoittanut paljon afroamerikkalaisista ja hänen vuoden 1981 etnisyyttä käsittelevä kirjansa on ollut myyntimenestys. Sowellin mukaan inhimillinen pääoma on keskeinen ihmisten taloudellista käyttäytymistä määrittävä tekijä[2].
Sowell on syntynyt Pohjois-Carolinassa, mutta kasvoi New Yorkin Harlemissa. Hän kävi lukiota New Yorkissa, kunnes joutui keskeyttämään sen 17-vuotiaana taloudellisista syistä. Sowell kutsuttiin asepalvelukseen ja hän palveli Yhdysvaltain merijalkaväessä valokuvaajana Korean sodan aikaan, joutumatta kuitenkaan itse osallistumaan sotaan.[3] Sowell on opiskellut taloustiedettä Harvardin yliopistossa, Columbian yliopistossa sekä Chicagon yliopistossa, josta hän valmistui tohtoriksi vuonna 1968.
