Fíxose famoso por interpretar o androide Ash en Alien, o Padre Vito Cornelius en Le Cinquième Élément, e o hobbit Bilbo Bulseiro en dous dos filmes de Peter Jackson: The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring e The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.

Durante moito tempo sufriu a enfermidade de Parkinson.^[1]
