1857 ലെ ഇന്ത്യൻ ലഹളയിൽ പോരാടിയ ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് ജനറൽ ആയിരുന്നു ലെഫ്റ്റനന്റ് ജനറൽ സർ ജെയിംസ് ഔട്ട്റാം, ഒന്നാം ബാരോണെറ്റ് , ജിസിബി , കെ.സി.എസ്.ഐ. (29 ജനുവരി 1803 - മാർച്ച് 11, 1863).

ഡെർബിഷയർ, ബട്ടർലി, ബെറ്റർലിൻ ഹാളിലെ ബെഞ്ചമിൻ ഔട്ട്റാമിന്റെ മകൻ ജെയിംസ് ഔട്ട്റാം, ഒരു സിവിൽ എഞ്ചിനിയർ ആയിരുന്നു. 1805-ൽ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ പിതാവ് മരിച്ചു. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ അമ്മ, ഹെർമിസ്റ്റണിലെ ജെയിംസ് ആൻഡേഴ്സന്റെ മകളാണ്. 1810-ൽ അബെർഡീൻഷെയറിലെത്തിയ അദ്ദേഹം, അബെർഡൻഷെയറിലേക്ക് താമസം മാറി. ഉട്നി സ്കൂളിൽ നിന്നും 1818-ൽ അബെർഡീനിലെ മാരിസ്ക്കൽ കോളേജിലേക്കും 1819-ൽ ഒരു ഇന്ത്യൻ കേഡറ്റ്ഷിപ്പും ലഭിച്ചു. ബോംബെയിൽ എത്തിയ അദ്ദേഹം തന്റെ ശ്രദ്ധേയമായ ഊർജ്ജസ്രോതസ്സ് ശ്രദ്ധയിൽ പെട്ടു. 1820 ജൂലൈ മാസത്തിൽ പൂനയിലെ വിപ്ലവത്തിന്റെ പന്ത്രണ്ടാമത്തെ റെജിമെന്റിലെ ആദ്യ ബറ്റാലിയനായി അദ്ദേഹം പ്രവർത്തിച്ചു. പിന്നീട് അദ്ദേഹം തന്റെ കരിയറിൽ വലിയ നേട്ടമുണ്ടെന്ന് കണ്ടെത്തി . ^[1]

1825- ൽ അദ്ദേഹം ഖണ്ഡേഷ് എന്നയാളെ അയച്ചു, അവിടെ അദ്ദേഹം ഭിൽസിലെ ഒരു ചെറിയ കാലാൾപ്പടയ്ക്ക് ശാരീരിക പരിശീലനം നൽകി. അവൻ അവരുടെമേൽ അത്ഭുതകരമായ വ്യക്തിഗത സ്വാധീനം നേടിയെടുത്തു, പിടിച്ചുപറിയും കൊള്ളയും കണ്ടെത്തുന്നതിൽ അവർ വിജയിച്ചു. അവനുണ്ടായിരുന്ന വിശ്വസ്തത വേട്ടയാടലുകളുടെ നേട്ടങ്ങളിൽ മുഖ്യ സ്രോതസ്സുണ്ടു്. ^[1]
