In 1949 werd de tweede editie van de Categoría Primera A gespeeld, de hoogste divisie in het Colombiaanse profvoetbal, in deze tijd heette de competitie nog Campeonato Professional. Aan deze editie deden niet tien, zoals in 1948, maar veertien clubteams mee. Nieuwkomer Deportivo Barranquilla trok zich halverwege de competitie terug, waardoor de resterende duels automatisch werden omgezet in een 1-0-overwinning voor de tegenpartij.

Omdat Millonarios en Deportivo Cali de reguliere competitie beëindigden met elk 44 punten speelden beide teams een beslissingswedstrijd, uitgesmeerd over twee duels om de landskampioen te bepalen.
