Gene Orloff

Gene Orloff (14. juni 1921–23. mars 2009)^[1] var ein USA-amerikansk fiolinist, konsertmeister, arrangør, kontraktør og studiomusikar.

Bakgrunn

Orloff, som var son av ein russisk innvandrar og fiolinbyggjar, prøvde å ta ned fiolinen til faren frå pianoet og spela på han. Han var berre tre år på den tida. Då han var fem, spelte han konsertar i heimbyen Boston. Seinare spelte han konsertar mellom anna i Carnegie Hall og med Boston Symphony. Etter å ha vunne eit stipend ved Curtis Institute of Music, slutta han på grunn av timeplanen og fann arbeid som kommersiell musikar og jobba tidvis 15 timar per dag.

I løpet av si tid spelte Orloff mellom anna med Meat Loaf, The Bee Gees, Aretha Franklin, Frank Sinatra og Barbra Streisand. Dotter til Orloff, Marcy, sa at ein av hans favorittar var Van McCoy.^[2]

Karriere

På slutten av 1940-talet var han med i Neal Hefti sitt orkester, saman med mellom anna Curley Russell, Shelley Manne og Flip Phillips, på ei plateinnspeling med Charlie Parker,^[3] og med Nat King Cole sin trio, The Muleskinners, som spelte for Woody Herman på vokal.^[4]

1970-åra

Under Van McCoy si leiing tok han seg av arrangementet for blåsarar og strykarar på albumet Faith Hope & Charity av Faith Hope and Charity som vart gjeve ut i 1970. Andre musikarar som spelte på albumet var Richard Tee og Leon Pendarvis på klaverinstrument, gitaristane Eric Gale og David Spinozza, bassistane Gordon Edwards, perkusjonistane Arthur Jenkins, George Devens og trommeslagaren Steve Gadd.^[5] Han spelte òg på albumet Disco Baby av Van McCoy & The Soul City Symphony som kom ut i 1975 og inneheldt «The Hustle».^[6]
