Love in Vain

«Love in Vain» er ein bluessong av Robert Johnson frå 1937. Songen vart gjeven ut på singel dette året, men finst òg på mange samlealbum med artisten.

Han har sidan vorte spelt av mange artistar, mest kjend av The Rolling Stones på albumet deira Let It Bleed frå 1969. Rolling Stones omarrangerte songen og la til nye akkordar. Richards hadde nyleg møtt Gram Parsons, og gjorde songen meir country-aktig. Stones spelte songen ein god del på konsertar frå 1969 til 1972, og han var med på konsertalbuma Get Yer Ya-Ya’s Out! og Stripped.

I nyare tid har songen vorte spelt av Eric Clapton på albumet Me and Mr. Johnson frå 2004. Clapton gjorde òg ei hyllest til songen i teksten på Derek and the Dominos-songen «Layla» (...please don't say we'll never find a way og tell me all my love’s in vain).

Songen er kjend for den melankolske teksten og tonen, den triste kjensla og stilen. Johnson var tilhengjar av bluessongaren og pianisten Leroy Carr, som i lag med gitaristen Scrapper Blackwell gjorde mange populære og viktige innspelingar. «Love In Vain» tar noko av den musikalske strukturen frå Carr-songen «In the Evenin’ When the Sun Goes Down».
