Nervus accessorius er det ellevte av 12 par med hjernenerver.
Nerven løper langs innsiden av hjernekassen og forlater skallen sammen med hjernenerve IX og X gjennom foramen jugulare, en større åpning som ligger mellom bakhodebeinet og tinningbeinet på hver side.[1] Nervus accessorius styrer sternocleidomastoideus--muskelen i halsen og trapezius i nakken. Sternocleidomastoideus er nødvendig for å snu på hodet, mens trapezius er festet til skulderbladene og brukes blant annet når man trekker på skuldrene.
