ਕਾਤਾਕਾਨਾ ਜਪਾਨੀ ਉੱਚਾਰਖੰਡ ਮਾਲਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਕਿ ਜਪਾਨੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਲਿਖਣ ਦਾ ਮੁੱਢਲਾ ਭਾਗ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲ ਹੀਰਾਗਾਨਾ, ਕਾਂਜੀ, ਤੇ ਲਾਤੀਨੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਦੇ ਲਈ ਰੋਮਾਂਜੀ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ।^[2] ਕਾਤਾਕਾਨਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦਾ ਅਰਥ ਹੈ "ਖੰਡਿਤ ਕਾਨਾ" ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਕਾਤਾਕਾਨਾ ਦੇ ਕਈ ਚਿੰਨ੍ਹ ਜਟਿਲ ਕਾਂਜੀ ਦੇ ਹਿੱਸੇ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਲਈ ਗਈ ਹੈ। ਹੀਰਾਗਾਨਾ ਤੇ ਕਾਤਾਕਾਨਾ ਦੋਨੋਂ ਕਾਨਾ ਸ਼ਾਖਾ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਆਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਜਾਪਾਨੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਦੀ ਹਰ ਆਵਾਜ਼ ਇੱਕ ਜਾਂ ਦੋ ਅੱਖਰਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ। ਸਵਰ ਅੱਖਰ (ਜਿਵੇਂ a, e, i,o,u) ਅ (ਕਟਾਕਾਨਾ ア)ਜਾਂ ਫੇਰ ਵਿਅੰਜਨ ਦੇ ਮਗਰ ਸਵਰ ਅੱਖਰ ਜਿਂਵੇ ਕਾ (ਕਟਾਕਾਨਾ カ);ਜਾਂ ਨ (ਕਟਾਕਾਨਾ ン)।

ਕਾਤਾਕਾਨਾ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋ ਵਿਦੇਸ਼ੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਵਾਲੇ ਸ਼ਬਦਾਂ ਦੀ ਜਪਾਨੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਲਿਪੀ ਕਰਣ ਲਈ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ। ਕਾਤਾਕਾਨਾ ਦੀ ਵਿਸ਼ੇਸ਼ਤਾ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਛੋਟੇ, ਸਿੱਧੀ ਲਕੀਰਾਂ ਤੇ ਤਿੱਖੇ ਕੋਨੇ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ।^[3]
