Meißen is a destrict (Kreis) in the Free State o Saxony, Germany. It is boondit bi (frae the north an clockwise) the state o Brandenburg, the destrict o Bautzen, the urban destrict Dresden, the destricts Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge, Mittelsachsen an Nordsachsen.

History

The destrict dates back tae the Amt Meißen, which wis first mentioned in 1334. The district wis ruled bi the Wettin dynasty. The Margraves o Meißen creatit the admeenistrative diveesion (Amt) in the 13t century. In 1835 the Amt wis convertit intae an Amtshauptmannschaft, wi the aurie o the current destrict covered bi the Amtshauptmannschaften Meißen, Dresden an Großenhain. In 1939, these wur renamit Landkreise (destricts). In the admeenistrative reform o 1952, several municipalities wur transferred tae the destricts o Freiberg an Döbeln. In 1990, the auld destrict borders wur restored, an in 1996 pairts o the destrict Dresden-Land wur addit. In August 2008 the destrict o Riesa-Großenhain wis addit tae the destrict tae give it its current size.

Geography

The main river o the destrict is the Elbe, which flows through the ceety o Meißen an aw.
