Syktyvkar (Roushie: Сыктывкар; Komi: Сыктывкар) is the caipital ceety o the Komi Republic, Roushie. Population: 235,006 (2010 Census);[2] 230,011 (2002 Census);[7] 232,117 (1989 Census).[8]
Etymologie
The ceety's current name comes frae Syktyv, the Komi name for the same river, plus kar, meanin "ceety".

Syktyvkar is locatit on the Sysola River, which is the oreegin o its umwhile name Ust-Sysolsk. The ceety is locatit near tae the pynt whaur the Sysola joins the lairger Vychegda River, which is itsel a branch o the Northren Dvina.

In 1921, Ust-Sysolsk wis gien the status o admeenistrative centre o the newly formit Komi Autonomous Soviet Republic. It wis gien the name o Syktyvkar, which is Komi for "a toun on the Sysola". In 1936, Syktyvkar became the caipital o the Komi ASSR.
