Irena Szewińska, née Kirszenstein (Polish pronunciation: [iˈrɛna ʂɛˈviɲska]; 24 May 1946 – 29 June 2018) was a Soviet-born Polish sprinter. She was born in Leningrad. She was Jewish.[1] She was the only athlete in history, male or female, to have held the world record in the 100m, the 200m and the 400m.[2] She won three gold medals at the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo, 1968 Olympics in Mexico City and at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal. She also won two Olympic silver medals in 1964 and two Olympic bronze medals in 1968 and 1972.

Szewińska died at a military hospital in Warsaw on 29 June 2018 from endometrial cancer at the age of 72.[3][4]
