Margot Honecker

Margot Honecker (née Feist; 17 April 1927 – 6 May 2016) was an East German politician. She was a member of the East German communist party and the East German regime until 1989. She was born in Halle, Saxony-Anhalt.

Personal life

From 1963 through 1989, she was "Minister of People's Education" (Ministerin für Volksbildung) of the GDR. She was married to Erich Honecker, the dictator of East Germany (1971 – 1989) from 1953 until his death of liver cancer in 1994.[1] She and her husband were exiled in Chile during the 1990s.[2]

Honecker died at her home while in exile in Santiago, Chile on 6 May 2016, aged 89.[3]
