Roanne is a French commune, a subprefecture in the Loire department in central France. It is in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. It is also the capital of the arrondissement of Roanne.

Geography

The commune of Roanne is in the north of the Loire department and has an area of 16.1 km2 (6.2 sq mi).[2] The average altitude is 281 m (922 ft) and the city hall is an altitude of 278 m (912 ft).[3]

The Loire river flows through the city. Two of its tributaries: Renaison and Rhins, also flow through the city and join the Loire in Roanne.

The inhabitants of Roanne are known, in French, as Roannais (women: Roannaises).[4]

With a population of 35,200,[5] Roanne has a population density of 2,184 inhabitants/km2, the highest density in the department.

Roanne forms, with other 14 communes, the urban area of Roanne with a population of 80,098 inhabitants (2014) and an area of 185.9 km2 (71.8 sq mi).[6] This urban area is the centre of the metropolitan area of Roanne, formed by 50 communes with a population of 107,348 inhabitants (2014) and an area of 807.0 km2 (311.6 sq mi).[7]

Roanne is a subprefecture of the Loire department, the capital of the arrondissement of Roanne and the administrative centre (French: chef-lieu) of two cantons:
