Bu ödül, Fransa Cumhurbaşkanı Jack Chirac adına, Fransa'nın ABD büyükelçisi tarafından yazara sunulmuştur. Pasifikte savaşan 13 askerin öyküsünü anlattığı romanı Çıplak Ve Ölü (ordudaki deneyimlerine dayanarak yazmıştır), dünya çapında büyük başarı kazandı. Norman Mailer, Pulitzer Ödülü sahibidir.
