乱世佳人》連續25年保持著票房最高的電影記錄,並且經通貨膨脹調整後,其票房收入超過其他所有電影

电影通過多个渠道产生收入,例如影院放映、家庭媒體、电视广播版权和文化衍生品等。不過,影院票房收入是行业出版物评估电影成功的主要指标,主要是因为影院数据相较于光碟等家庭媒體和广播版权销售数据更便於獲取,也与历史惯例有关。本表中列出了按名目收入和实际收入排名的票房收入最高电影的列表、各年的最高收入电影列表、展示最高票房电影记录变迁的时间轴,以及票房收入最高的电影系列的列表。所有列表均按国际影院票房表现排名,尽可能排除来自家庭媒體、广播版权和文化衍生品的收入。

传统上,戰爭片音乐片和历史片是最受欢迎的类型,但系列电影一直是21世纪表现最好的類型之一。超级英雄类型的电影也备受关注,漫威电影宇宙中的十一部电影名列名目收入榜单的前列。最成功的超级英雄电影《復仇者聯盟:終局之戰》也位列名目收入榜单的第二位,总共有四部基于《复仇者》漫画的电影进入前二十名。其他漫威漫画改编的电影《蜘蛛侠》《X戰警》系列也取得了成功,而改編自DC漫畫的《蝙蝠侠》和《超人》电影通常也表现不错。《星際大戰》也在名目收入榜单中占有一席之地,共有五部电影入榜,而《侏羅紀公園》系列也占据重要位置。雖然名目收入榜单主要由改编自现有作品的电影和续集主导,但榜首仍然是原创作品《阿凡达》。家庭动画电影始终表现良好,迪士尼电影在家庭媒體时代之前透過重映赚取了可观的收入。迪士尼后来也取得了《冰雪奇缘》及其续集、《動物方城市》和《狮子王》(包括其计算机动画重制版)的成功,而其皮克斯部门也有许多优秀作品,其中《腦筋急轉彎2》《超人特攻隊2》《玩具總動員3》和《玩具總動員4》都表现突出。除了迪士尼和皮克斯的动画外,《神偷奶爸》《史瑞克》系列也取得了极大的成功。

《阿凡达》以超过29亿美元的全球票房收入被誉为“票房最高”电影,但这种说法通常仅指影院收入,并未考虑家庭媒體和电视收入,而这些收入往往占电影总收入的很大一部分。若将家庭娱乐收入纳入考量,哪部电影最成功就不那么显而易见了。《泰坦尼克号》从录像和DVD销售及租赁中获得了12亿美元的收入[1],外加影院收入22亿美元。虽然《阿凡达》的完整销售数据不可得,但在北美销售了1600万张DVD和藍光光碟[2],收入达3.45亿美元,最终在全球售出了3000万张DVD和藍光光碟[3]。考虑到這些家庭媒體收入后,两部电影的总收入均超过了30亿美元。电视广播版权也显著增加了电影的收入,截至2010年,一部电影通常会透過两次电视播放赚取相当于其影院票房收入的20%至25%,再加上按次付费的收入[4];《泰坦尼克号》从NBCHBO的广播版权中获得了额外5500万美元[1],相当于其北美票房收入的约9%。

《泰坦尼克号》在Box Office MojoThe Numbers的总票房数据均不准确。在2023年重新上映之前,这两个追踪网站的总票房数字都高于真实数据。
  • 截至2019年,Box Office Mojo正确记录了《泰坦尼克号》在首次上映时的票房为18.43亿美元,2012年3D重映票房为3.44亿美元,2017年有限重映票房为69.2万美元,终身总票房为21.87亿美元[12]。2020年进行了一次有限重映后,Box Office Mojo误将700万美元加到了首次上映的票房总数上[13]。到2021年底,Box Office Mojo已经修正了首次上映的总票房,但误将700万美元加到了2012年和2017年重映的票房上,导致总票房错误地增加了1400万美元,达到了22.02亿美元[14]。到2023年初,Box Office Mojo修正了2017年重映的票房,总票房降至21.95亿美元,但仍保留了2012年重映的错误[15]

世界各地的通貨膨脹率各不相同,使得通貨膨脹調整變得複雜

由于长期通货膨胀的影响,尤其是电影票价的显著上涨,未经过通货膨胀调整的榜单往往更加偏向于后期上映的电影[21]。虽然这种未调整的榜单在媒体报道中较为常见,但由于不同年代的电影在经济环境和票价上存在巨大差异,因此并不适用于跨时代的电影比较。许多早期电影虽然在商业上取得了巨大成功,但由于未调整票价的榜单未考虑价格增长因素,很难出现在现代电影的票房排名中[22]。为弥补货币贬值的影响,一些榜单会进行通货膨胀调整,但即使如此,这种方法仍无法完全解决问题,因为电影票价的变动并不总是与通货膨胀率同步。例如,1970年电影票价为1.55美元,相当于按2004年通货膨胀调整后的6.68美元;而到了1980年,票价上涨至2.69美元,按2004年价格调整后反而下降到了5.50美元[23]。此外,各国电影票价的涨幅不同,使得全球总票房的通货膨胀调整更加复杂[21]

另一个影响因素是电影的多种放映格式,不同格式的票价各不相同。例如,《阿凡达》不仅以2D版本上映,还提供了3DIMAX版本:该片近三分之二的票房来自3D放映,平均票价为10美元,而约六分之一的票房来自IMAX放映,平均票价超过14.50美元,相比之下,2010年2D电影的平均票价仅为7.61美元[24]。此外,社会和经济因素也会影响观众购票数量,例如人口变化[25]、国际市场的扩张[26][27][28],以及观众群体的差异。某些电影在儿童票价较低的市场表现更好,而另一些电影则在票价较高的大城市更受欢迎[22]

目前衡量电影成功的标准仍然基于未调整的总票房收入,主要是因为电影行业的传统做法:影院将票房收入报告给发行方,发行方再向媒体公布[29]。若改用基于票房销量(即观影人次)而非票房总收入的统计方式,将面临诸多问题,因为较早期电影的数据通常只有票房收入,而没有具体的售票数量[25]。此外,电影行业主要关注当前上映的电影,因此未调整的票房数据更符合市场营销需求,使得新上映的大片更容易进入高票房排名,被宣传为“史上最卖座电影”[23][30]。由于营销和新闻报道的需求,行业缺乏动力转向更具代表性的分析方式[29]

尽管通货膨胀调整存在固有困难,但是仍有许多尝试。调整后的估算结果取决于用于计算的物价指数[30]汇率转换方式,这些因素都会影响最终的排名。1939年首映的《乱世佳人》通常被认为是最成功的电影,吉尼斯世界纪录在2014年估算其调整后的全球票房收入为34亿美元。关于《乱世佳人》的调整后总票房,各方估算存在较大差异:其版权持有方透納娛樂公司在2007年估算其调整后票房为33亿美元,略低于吉尼斯的估算[31];其他估算结果则略有不同,其中一项2010年的估算将其调整后票房定在略低于30亿美元[32],而另一项2006年的估算则给出了38亿美元的数字[33]。最接近《乱世佳人》的竞争对手因数据来源不同而有所不同。吉尼斯世界纪录将《阿凡达》列为第二名,调整后票房为30亿美元,而其他估算则认为《泰坦尼克号》更接近,其首轮全球票房在2010年调整后约为29亿美元[32]

《乱世佳人》的调整后总票房包括其原始上映收入和截至1998年的重映收入,这些数据基于吉尼斯设定的基准年份进行调整。此外,其2019年的票房收入[36]基于2020年指数进行调整。2020年代该片曾进行几次小规模重映,但这些重映的票房收入未计入调整后的总票房。

《阿凡达》的调整后总票房包括其原始上映及四次重映的收入。其中,原始上映和2010年特别版的票房收入是基于吉尼斯设定的基准年份进行调整,而2020年和2021年的票房收入依据2021年指数调整,2022年的票房收入则依据2022年指数调整[37]

吉尼斯对《鐵達尼號》的调整后总票房在2012年(2011年发布)和2015年版本之间仅增加了1.02亿美元,增幅4.2%,与榜单中其他调整后总票房的增幅一致。此外,吉尼斯未计入该片2012年3D重映的票房收入[34][38]。本表纳入了该次重映的3.43亿美元票房,依据2013年指数调整[39]。此外,《鐵達尼號》在2017年和2020年的小规模重映共获得762,994美元票房,这部分票房已被纳入该片25周年重映的收入,依据2023年指数调整[40]

年度票房冠軍

票房数据通常以总收入或发行商租金形式报告,后者尤为常见于老电影的统计。发行商租金常常被误认为是家庭媒體收入,实际上則是指发行商从电影票房收入中获得的份额(即票房总收入减去影院的分成)[42][43]。历史上,当发行商拥有电影院时,租金价格通常在30%到40%之间,相当于支付给发行商的总收入的三分之一多一些[44]。在现代市场中,租金费用可能会有所不同,主要取决于多种因素,不過大公司出品的电影平均租金为43%[42]

Variety, for example, reported that Hell's Angels cost $3.2 million to make, and by July, 1931, eight months after its release, the production cost had nearly been paid off. Keats claimed the picture cost $4 million to make and that it earned twice that much within twenty years. The production cost estimate is probably correct. Hughes worked on the picture for over two years, shooting it first as a silent and then as a talkie. Lewis Milestone said that in between Hughes experimented with shooting it in color as well. But Variety's earnings report must be the fabrication of a delirious publicity agent, and Keats' the working of a myth maker. During the seven years it was in United Artists distribution, Hell's Angels grossed $1.6 million in the domestic market, of which Hughes' share was $1.2 million. Whatever the foreign gross was, it seems unlikely that it was great enough to earn a profit for the picture.
