Brampton Transit (BT) is a public transport bus operator for the City of Brampton in the Regional Municipality of Peel, and within the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) in Ontario, Canada. Brampton Transit began operations in 1974. In 2023, the system had a ridership of 49,200,800, or about 219,500 per weekday as of the fourth quarter of 2023.
In 2010, Brampton Transit introduced Züm, a series of express bus routes running along various major roads within Brampton, as well as in neighbouring municipalities. This includes Queen Street and Highway 7 from Downtown Brampton to Vaughan Metropolitan Centre and York University, along Main Street from Sandalwood to Square One in Mississauga, along Steeles Avenue from Lisgar GO Station to Humber College, along Bovaird Drive and Airport Road from Mount Pleasant GO Station to Malton GO Station and Pearson Airport (Viscount Station), and along Queen Street and Mississauga Road from Downtown Brampton to Mount Pleasant GO Station.
Connections
Brampton Transit is connected with Milton Transit to the west, Mississauga's MiWay to the south, Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) to the southeast and York Region Transit (YRT) to the east. The Züm network directly connects to these neighbouring transit agencies, in some areas overlapping with them for several stops. This includes the 501 Züm Queen in Vaughan running alongside YRT/Viva from Highway 50 to Vaughan Metropolitan Centre, 502 Züm Main in Mississauga running alongside MiWay from Derry to Square One, and 505/505A Züm Bovaird in Mississauga running alongside MiWay and TTC routes operating as MiWay from Morning Star to Viscount Station.
Most major Brampton Transit conventional routes running north to south connect to MiWay, primarily beginning or ending their route at Derry Road. As with some of the routes on the Züm network, some conventional routes also overlap well into Mississauga providing additional or integrated service alongside MiWay to their respective corridors. Examples include the 7/7A Kennedy from Derry Rd to Courtneypark Dr, 14/14A Torbram from the municipal border to Westwood Square, and 18 Dixie from the municipal border to Meyerside Dr.
Steeles Avenue is a major Brampton thoroughfare. Route 11 Steeles formerly ran from west of Brampton Gateway at Hurontario Street, and eastward into Toronto to Humber College's North Campus. There is a transfer at the college with Route 50/50A Gore Road, that serves developments in The Gore Road area near the former Highway 50 and Albion Road. In September 2007, the western part of the route was cut back to Brampton Gateway and replaced with Route 51 Hereford. It connects with Miway at Mississauga Road and Meadowvale Boulevard. The 511 Züm Steeles route serves the entire length of Steeles through the city, from Humber College to Lisgar GO station in Mississauga. Alongside with its local equivalent 11 Steeles, it is the only Brampton Transit corridor to both start and end its entire route outside of the Brampton border.
Brampton Transit carries commuters to and from the Kitchener line railway station operated by GO Transit. There are transfers to and from the trains and buses at the Bramalea, Brampton, and Mount Pleasant stations, and direct connections to express buses at Bramalea City Centre and Trinity Common, and adjacent stop at Brampton Gateway.
GO bus connections to other municipalities in the GTHA can be made at Bramalea GO Station, which is a major hub for the frequent Highway 407 GO bus corridor. On top of being on the Kitchener Line corridor, this station alone gives Brampton Transit a direct connection to and from major municipalities in the GTHA such as Toronto, Mississauga, Halton Hills, Oakville, Burlington, Hamilton, Vaughan, Richmond Hill, Markham, Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa, and outside regions such as Waterloo and Guelph.
Fares
Fares are as of May 10, 2023.[3] The cash fare is CA$4.50.
Customers paying their bus fares with cash (and in some cases, special purpose paper tickets) may request for a paper transfer from the bus driver; for customers using Presto cards, the transfer is applied automatically from initial tap on. Both are valid for two hours from the time of first boarding, which allows customers to transfer freely between Brampton Transit buses in any direction, as well as transferring to neighbouring Milton Transit, MiWay (Mississauga) and York Region Transit services.
Since August 11, 2022, customers also have the option to pay the equivalent of the Brampton Transit adult cash fare by contactless credit card or mobile wallet by tapping it on a Presto fare reader.
Similar to the Presto card, the 2-hour transfer, valid in any direction, is applied automatically onto a customer's contactless credit card or mobile wallet after the initial fare is paid.
Preschoolers, blind people and senior residents – who resides in the City of Brampton for those ages 65 and older so long as they carry a valid Brampton Transit Identification Card and a Presto card with a free annual pass loaded on it – can travel fare free on Brampton Transit. War veterans also travel for free by Veteran Transit Pass Program.

Bus rapid transit
Züm is Brampton's bus rapid transit system.[7] In order of each route initially opening, its first corridor, 501 Zum Queen was launched on September 20, 2010, and runs along Queen Street from Downtown Brampton to York University via Bramalea Terminal. It later branched out to add to frequency to the route with the 501A going along Highway 407, and the 501C begins at Bramalea Terminal rather than Downtown Brampton, to York University (The 501A branch is not operating until further notice). 502 Züm Main opened in 2011 and runs North & South along Main/Hurontario Street from Sandalwood Loop to Mississauga City Centre Transit Terminal (Square One). 511 Züm Steeles opened in 2012 and goes east to west along Steeles Avenue, from Lisgar GO Station in Meadowvale, Mississauga, to Humber College in Toronto via Sheridan College and Brampton Gateway Terminal. 561 Zum Queen West opened in 2016 and operates service from Downtown Brampton to Mount Pleasant GO Station via Queen Street and Mississauga Road.
505 Züm Bovaird first opened in 2014 and went east to west along Bovaird Drive from Mount Pleasant GO Station, to the Queen Loop at Goreway and Queen. A north to south extension along Airport Road to Malton GO station was opened in 2018, realigning the route while no longer servicing the Queen Loop. A branch of this route, 505A opening in 2022, runs from Trinity Common Terminal to Viscount Station on the Pearson Airport Terminal Link Train.
A proposed Zum Route along Chinguacousy Road will connect the Cassie Campbell Community Centre at Sandalwood Parkway, to Bramalea GO Station via Steeles Ave. It is expected to be in operation in fall 2024, to coincide with the opening of the Hurontario LRT. This corridor is also said to help alleviate overcrowding on the existing 4/4A Chinguacousy, as well as Route 511/511A/511C along Steeles Avenue. As the routes’ are currently the 2nd busiest and 5th busiest respectively.
