Велике мачке (лат. Pantherinae) су потпородица породице мачака (Felidae).

Еволуција

Према проценама, велике мачке су се појавиле пре између шест и десет милиона година.^[2] Анализа ДНК је показала да се у посебну врсту прво развио тигар (Panthera tigris), затим јагуар (Panthera onca), па лав (Panthera leo), и на крају леопард (Panthera pardus) и снежни леопард (Panthera uncia).^[3]

Велике мачке је први описао Реџиналд Инес Покок 1917. године.^[4] Покок је поделио велике мачке у два рода, пантери (Panthera) и облачни леопарди (Neofelis).^[4]
