അക്കാന്തേസീ സസ്യകുടുംബത്തിലെ ഒരു ജീനസ്സാണ് അകാന്തസ് (Acanthus). ഏകദേശം 30 സ്പീഷിസുകളുള്ള ഈ സസ്യജനുസ്സിലെ അംഗങ്ങളെ ഉഷ്ണമേഖലകളിലും മിതോഷ്ണമേഖലകളിലും കണ്ടുവരുന്നു.  മെഡിറ്ററേനിയൻ സമുദ്രതട പ്രദേശങ്ങളിലും ഏഷ്യയിലും ഈ ജനുസ്സിലെ സസ്യവൈവിധ്യം കൂടുതലായി കാണപ്പെടുന്നുണ്ട്. കൂർത്ത മുള്ളുകളുള്ളത് എന്നർത്ഥം വരുന്ന ഗ്രീക്ക് പദത്തിൽ നിന്നാണ് അകാന്തസ് എന്ന പദം രൂപം കൊണ്ടത്.[2][3]
